Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
