Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
